ADB Pledges Support for Growth and Human Capital

PHNOM PENH – Asian Development Bank (ADB) president Masato Kanda met with Prime Minister Hun Manet to reaffirm ADB’s commitment to strengthening ties with Cambodia and promoting economic diversification, private sector growth and investment in people for inclusive development.

During his courtesy visit at the Peace Palace on March 20, Kanda acknowledged the growing collaboration between ADB and Cambodia, expressing optimism for even closer ties in the future. 

Kanda noted that strong leadership and a focus on people-centered development are crucial amid increasing global challenges. 

“ADB remains committed to supporting Cambodia as it navigates economic shifts and fosters new opportunities, particularly for the most vulnerable communities,” he said. 

Marking his first visit to Cambodia after assuming office on February 24, Kanda visited projects supported by ADB in Kep province on March 19, including the Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries project and Second Upper Secondary Education Sector Development Program. 

The projects’ success in supporting coastal communities that rely on marine resources while enhancing human resources, particularly on STEM education and female student empowerment, highlights the strong partnership between ADB and Cambodia.

Hun Manet expressed appreciation for ADB’s support over the past decades which has significantly contributed to socio-economic progress.

He highlighted the significance of strategic goals to drive economic growth, generate employment and promote sustainable development. 

To directly benefit local communities, Hun Manet outlined key measures, including investments in infrastructure, training programs and capacity building. 

Kanda also met with Economy Minister Aun Pornmoniroth, Agriculture Minister Dith Tina, Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron, Industry Minister Hem Vanndy, Labor Minister Heng Sour, Water Resources Minister Thor Chetha and National Bank of Cambodia Governor Chea Serey. 

ADB has a growing portfolio in Cambodia, valued at around $2.2 billion. Over the past three years, its sovereign commitments to the country have averaged around $350 million annually.
