The 16th annual festival that was scheduled to be held in Siem Reap from Nov. 18—29 has been pushed back due to the latest COVID-19 cluster in Cambodia and will now be held online later this month.

PHNOM PENH--The Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops (APFW) will continue to hold its 16th edition virtually through late November to early December 2020 followed by a visual workshop held in January 2021.

Organized amid the global pandemic, the longest running international photography event in Southeast Asia, Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops will be held online from Nov. 29—Dec. 5, according to a statement from the festival’s organizers issued on Nov. 15.

According to the statement, the festival will also be carried out with a week of talks and slideshow projections by invited guest curators and will be concluded with its Closing Night in a shared online event with Nepal’s Photo Kathmandu.

“All events online will be free, live-streamed and open to the public,” the statement read. “On-site events will strictly follow the COVID-19 health and safety protocols recommended by Siem Reap’s Provincial Department of Health.”

Festival Director Jessica Lim said it has become more common that several arts events across the globe are being held online due to the pandemic in order to maintain safety and guaranty public health.

“It has been challenging but it has also given us new vigor and the opportunity to launch new initiatives, which we hope will become part of our regular program for years to come,” Lim said.

This year’s event will also include the Visual Storytelling Workshops which will bring together 15 Cambodian participants along with six Cambodian tutors.

Originally scheduled to take place in Siem Reap in late November 2020, the workshop has been moved to Jan. 10—16, 2021 and the workshop itself will be crucial in helping participants develop visual storytelling skills, a deeper understanding of visual language, and a unique artistic vision, the statement read.

The Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops is an annual event held since 2005 in Siem Reap City with the objective of creating a space for interaction, exchange and dialogue among photographers and the public with a focus on Asia.
