SIEM REAP – Renovation of the walls around Angkor Thom, which is north of the Dei Chhnang Gate, will be completed by the end of the year after six months of repairs, the APSARA National Authority says.
Mao Sokny, an expert from the Department of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, said urgent repairs were needed due to significant damage caused by their age and factors such as rainfall, plant roots sprouting into the stones, and a lack of maintenance.
Sokny said experts use traditional techniques to repair the walls. They created a supporting wall behind the original wall. This strengthens the original wall while countering pressure from the soil.
The APSARA Authority repairs walls to prevent further damage, preserve the original appearance for future generations and attract tourists. During the repair, it also employs residents.
The wall north of the Dei Chhnang Gate is the sixth section to be renovated.
