Brunei Sees 1.1 pct Population Increase in 2022: Statistics

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei's latest population estimates for 2022 was 445,400 people compared to 440,715 people in 2021, a rise of 1.1 percent, a government report said on Wednesday.



According to the Report of the Population Estimates 2022 released by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, Brunei citizens accounted for the largest share of 76.0 percent (338,300 people) of the total population, while the shares of the permanent residents and temporary residents were 5.8 percent (25,800 people) and 18.3 percent (81,300 people), respectively.



The report showed that the population in 2022 comprised 235,000 males (52.8 percent) and 210,400 females (47.2 percent), meaning the sex ratio was 111.7 males for every 100 females.



The Malays formed the largest community in the country, with a share of 73.5 percent (327,300 people) of the total population. The racial groups of Chinese and others comprised 9.5 percent (42,300 people) and 17.0 percent (75,800 people) of the total population, respectively.
