PHNOM PENH -- King Norodom Sihamoni on Nov. 9 oversaw a ceremony at the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh, which was attended by Cambodian government officials and international representatives, many Cambodians and foreigners as well as students who were holding flowers and photos of King Sihamoni and the late King Norodom Sihanouk.

The ceremony marked the 71st anniversary of Cambodia declaring its independence that, on Nov. 9, 1953, put an end to the country being part of Indochina, which was administered by France.

The 71st National Independence Day was also the 71st anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.

The Independence Monument, where the ceremony took place on Nov. 9, was built during the regime of King Sihanouk who had stepped down from the throne to enter politics and was ruling the country as the elected political leader at the time. The monument was inaugurated in 1962.
