PHNOM PENH – Cambodian Vovinam athletes finish their Southeast Asian (SEA) Games with a flurry of medals. After 4 days of competition, the men’s and women’s teams gathered a total of 27 rewards, of which 10 are gold, 8 silver, and 9 bronze.

The Vietnamese traditional martial art started on May 6 and ended on May 9.

Cambodian Coach Em Sothearath said these many medals are a big achievement for the national teams, who had better results this year than during the latest SEA Games edition in Vietnam.

He attributes the success to the effort every athlete had put into their training and matches, doing their best for the country.

With 6 medals around her neck, among which 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze, Pal Chhor Raksmey is the most awarded fighter.

She said she didn’t expect to win as many combats and only expected to gather three gold medals.

“I only know that I tried hard and am determined to win. In the end, the result depends on the judge,” she said on the final day of the vovinam competition.

She added that the actual fighting was not as hard as the training.

Raksmey said the whole team has been training as soon as the 31st SEA Games ended last year in Vietnam. Moreover, they remained isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic, to stay focused and exercise as much as they could.

She stressed that she really felt motivated by the support she received from her family, friends and the Cambodians.
