Cambodia forges diplomatic relations with Monaco

Cambodia’s decision to forge ties with Monaco comes as the country is intent on diversifying friends and partners on the international stage


PHNOM PENH--Cambodia and Monaco formally established diplomatic relations last week, the two countries agreeing to respect each other’s sovereignty and adhere to the principle of non-interference. 


During a ceremony that took place at the Embassy of Monaco in Paris, Cambodian Ambassador to France Chem Widhya and Monaco Ambassador to France Christophe Steiner signed a joint statement to that effect on July 11 with the approval of their respective governments.  


“The Kingdom of Cambodia and Principality of Monaco decide to establish diplomatic relations with an aim to encourage mutual tolerance and strengthen friendship as well as cooperation between our two people taking effect from the date of signature,” according to the governments’ statement obtained Monday. 


The statement also specified that diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Monaco stand on the purpose and principle of the United Nations charter and international laws.


Monaco, which is a constitutional monarchy, is the second smallest city-state in the world with the territory of 1.95 square km. It also is one of the wealthiest countries.  


Cambodia’s decision to forge ties with Monaco comes as the country is intent on diversifying friends and partners on the international stage. According to the foreign ministry, Cambodia has so far established diplomatic relations with 170 countries, and currently has 60 diplomatic representatives posted abroad.
