PHNOM PENH — Cambodia is sending its defense chief to Laos this weekend as Vientiane marks 50 years since the founding of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, underscoring the two neighbors’ deepening military and diplomatic ties at a moment of heightened regional attention.
Cambodia’s Defense Minister, General Tea Seiha, will head a senior delegation to Vientiane from December 1–2 to join celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Laos National Day.
The Ministry of National Defense announced on December 1 that the trip follows an invitation from Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Khamlieng Outhakaysone.
General Seiha will be accompanied by officials from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces as part of the high-level mission.
Laos will commemorate December 2 as the day the Lao People’s Democratic Republic was proclaimed in 1975. During the visit, General Seiha is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on General Outhakaysone on the sidelines of the national festivities.
The ministry said the visit aims to reinforce longstanding solidarity between the two militaries and their citizens, while paving the way for broader defense cooperation to support peace, stability, and sustainable development.
General Seiha last traveled to Vientiane in mid-October to attend the four-day Cambodia–Laos–Vietnam Defense Ministers’ Meeting, where the three countries pledged to deepen regional security coordination and strengthen joint responses to natural disasters.
To mark its golden jubilee, Laos has organized a large military parade, nationwide cultural events, and heightened security preparations. The parade will spotlight the country’s achievements over the past five decades and present Laos’ development path to domestic audiences and foreign partners.
Across Laos, streets and public squares have been adorned with national and Party flags. In the capital, major monuments and sacred sites are also draped in bright colors, creating a distinctly festive and patriotic mood.
Cambodia and Laos established diplomatic relations in 1956, and their bilateral ties have steadily expanded through regular exchanges between top leaders. In 2019, both countries agreed to elevate their cooperation to a Comprehensive and Long-Lasting Strategic Partnership.
