PHNOM PENH – Cambodia has never been a field hockey hotspot. But local athletes are committed to doing their best on the rink while their country is hosting the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) for the first time.

Prom Koeurm, a player on the Cambodian women's field hockey team, expressed her elation at the opportunity to compete for the Cambodian national team for the very first time, just before the start of the first hockey game of the two-week competition.

Though she has only been practicing for four months, she is committed to giving everything she has for the SEA Games.

“I am very happy to represent Cambodia and am working very hard for the upcoming match,” she said on May 1, a few minutes before the meeting against Indonesia.

She will take every opportunity to gain experience during each match, not only for the ongoing competition but also to make Cambodia a strong opponent in the future SEA Games.

Despite the fact both the women’s and men’s national teams are not familiar enough with the sport, she hopes they can bring a medal to Cambodia.

The will to win is shared by Sok Visal, an athlete for the men’s field hockey team, who is delighted to represent the men's hockey Cambodia team.

He hopes that he can bring the medal to the national team and will do his best for the hockey sport in Cambodia.

Unfortunately, their efforts did not bear fruits and both teams were defeated on May 1, for their first match.

The men's team lost 1 to 9 against Malaysia, while the women’s lost 1 to 7 against Indonesia.

The next matches are scheduled for May 2, when the Cambodian men’s team will meet Singapore and the women’s team will play Thailand.
