The death of four people on Jan. 23 during a jostling in a crowd, which took place during a distribution of envelopes containing $10 and rice at the residence of an oknha on the occasion of Chinese New Year, has recently shined a cruel light on the social inequalities at work in the country.
Of course, poverty has greatly been reduced during the last two decades.
Of course, the astronomical gaps in wealth between the poor and the most affluent are not specific to the country.
And of course, there was probably in this crowd people who were not that poor and had been attracted by the smell of a few banknotes.
Nevertheless, this tragedy shows a picture of the country that is quite sad.
Some might say: on the contrary, wasn’t it a nice gesture this act of charity coming from a wealthy family toward those men and women upon whom fortune has not smiled.
They will no doubt add that those distributions of envelopes on the eve of a new year is a centuries-old tradition.
The fact remains that charity depends upon the goodwill of the donor, who may not be as selfless as he seems since, in the process, he takes care of his public relations and his karma.
Finally, one does not build a harmonious society on charity.
Because it finds its purpose in injustice.
