SIEM REAP— Angkor Wat witnessed a spectacular convergence of celestial and human interest during the March equinox, from March 21 to 23. The rare astronomical event, whereby the rising sun into sight is perfectly aligned with the temple's central tower, drew a record 80,463 individuals to the Angkor Archaeological Park, the Siem Reap provincial administration reported.

This biannual spectacle, occurring in both March (during the dry season) and September (during the rainy season), transforms the iconic temple into a living sundial, captivating onlookers with its precise harmony between architecture and nature.

The anticipation was palpable on March 21, the first day of the equinox, as approximately 16,000 local tourists and Siem Reap residents, joined by 3,500 international travelers, converged on the park before dawn.

The following day, March 22, saw an even larger crowd of around 35,000 local tourists and 3,500 foreign tourists, indicating a growing momentum of interest. By the final day, March 23, the park still buzzed with activity, hosting 23,000 local tourists and 2,130 international visitors, as people sought a final glimpse of the phenomenon.

This year's March equinox saw a notable surge in attendance compared to the previous September's event, which drew nearly 40,000 tourists. March 21 alone surpassed 10,000 visitors, highlighting the growing allure of this unique event.

The increased numbers suggest a rising awareness and appreciation for the Angkor Equinox, both locally and internationally.

Looking ahead, anticipation is already building for the second equinox of 2025, scheduled for September, when the temple will once again become a focal point for those seeking to witness this extraordinary celestial phenomenon.
