PHNOM PENH – Cambodia is receiving around $2 million as a special fund from China under the Mekong-Lancang cooperation framework for eight projects this year.
Cambodian Foreign Minister Sok Chenda Sophea and Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin were due to sign the agreement on Sept. 5 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The ministry said the fund will be used in tourism, demining, agriculture, rural development, raising awareness of Mekong-Lancang cooperation, and regional economic enhancement.
It will also be spent on technical and vocational education and training on capacity-building and flood risk control.
In 2023, Cambodia also received around $2 million for nine projects in transportation and logistics, information technology, food security, research, capacity-building and heritage conservation.
Created in 2016, the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation has six members countries, Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
In the past seven years, special funds have supported around 90 projects.
Cambodia considers such an act as a commitment contributing to building a community with a shared future of peace, prosperity and sustainable development for all Mekong-Lancang countries.
