PHNOM PENH – Chinese investors have plans to develop a 100-hectare special economic zone in Bati district, Takeo province, Takeo Provincial Governor Vy Samnang said on August 23.

“Chinese investors initially require 30 hectares of land, with the intention to further expand this area to 100 hectares to establish special economic zones focusing on shoes and garment industries,” Samnang said.

“Shoes and garments will be exported to the European Union and the United States.

“The project will generate numerous job opportunities for locals,” he said.

Governor Vei Samnang endorsed the project, asserting that the special economic zone will significantly contribute to poverty reduction in Takeo province.

In the first half of 2024, the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) approved 190 investment projects totaling $3.2 billion, generating 168,572 jobs.

The number of investment projects increased to 77 locations, with an increase in capital exceeding $2 billion, compared to the same period in 2023.

Chinese investment ranked second, comprising 42 percent of the total, while domestic investment accounted for 50 percent of the overall investment.
