SIEM REAP – Buying local handicraft products is a big part of the tourist experience. In Siem Reap, Satcha takes it one step further. Satcha, set on nearly a hectare of land in the city, describes itself as the first Cambodian handicraft incubation center.
It takes in skilled silk weavers, ceramic makers, jewelry makers and sculptors and trains them how to run their own businesses by adding skills such as accounting.
While they are at Satcha they are paid to make their products using designs which combine traditional Khmer themes with a contemporary look. Pierre-Andre Romano is chairman of Satcha. He tells Alan Kirk of the company’s vision to offer visitors the best of Khmer craftsmanship while building up the business skills of the province’s workers.
