SIEM REAP – Prime Minister Hun Manet officially inaugurated the Angkor Sangkranta celebration in front of the iconic Angkor Wat, expressing hopes that the event would draw millions of tourists and provide a significant boost to local businesses.
Angkor Sangkranta is the country’s largest cultural celebration, traditionally held during the Khmer New Year.
This year marks Hun Manet’s first time presiding over the event since taking office in 2023. In 2024, the festival was celebrated at the provincial level, in line with other regions across the country.
The prime minister emphasized that Angkor Sangkranta is more than just a New Year celebration—it’s a cultural showcase to the world and a driver of local tourism.
“The event reflects Cambodia’s culture and is an opportunity to showcase our traditions and heritage to the world,” he said. “It’s not just an occasion to celebrate Khmer New Year but also to boost local tourism.”
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hun Manet highlighted the economic impact of the event, noting a dramatic rise in tourism—from 180,000 visitors in 2018 to 2.1 million in 2023.
He outlined three key achievements of Angkor Sangkranta: fostering national unity, promoting tourism, and stimulating the local economy in Siem Reap. “Through this event, people from all walks of life have come together in solidarity, regardless of religion, to ensure its success,” he said.
He also pointed out that the event demonstrates Cambodia’s safety and peace, particularly in Siem Reap, which could further encourage tourism. “Organizing the event is our pride that we’ve done together,” he said, adding, “Spreading positivity through social media about our country will attract more tourists.”
Hun Manet emphasized that the festival plays a vital role in strengthening the local economy, citing high hotel and guesthouse bookings as well as increased sales among local vendors. Other tourist destinations across the country also saw a surge in visitors.
“That means it has boosted Siem Reap’s economy,” he said.
On the previous evening, the prime minister toured the popular Pub Street, a bustling nightlife destination for tourists. He mentioned speaking with a Tuk-tuk driver who said he was transporting more passengers than ever before.
Hun Many, head of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia—the organization behind the event—said Angkor Sangkranta has now spread to other provinces, each hosting their own celebrations during the Khmer New Year.
While the event elevates Cambodia’s reputation globally, it also offers a meaningful opportunity for youth to contribute to national development.
A vibrant array of cultural performances and exhibitions is on display throughout the festival—from traditional dance and folk games to martial arts—offering visitors a vivid and immersive experience of Cambodian heritage.
