PHNOM PENH – Opposition activist Hun Kosal will be defended by lawyer Son Chum Choun in court.

The information was revealed on April 4 by Meach Sovannara, another opposition activist, two weeks after Kosal has been arrested along with Yim Sinorn.

Both men, who are known to be close to detained former opposition leader Kem Sokha, were arrested on March 21 for posting on Facebook alleged critical statements about Prime Minister Hun Sen related to King Sihamoni.

They were charged with insulting the King and inciting serious social unrest, under articles 437, 494, and 495 of the Penal Code.

On March 28, Yim Sinorn was released on bail after he wrote a letter apologizing to the King and Prime Minister Hun Sen for his posts.

But Hun Kosal remains in custody.

“Finding an attorney [will help] challenge the court proceedings, even if there is no hope,” said Meach Sovannara.

While no date has yet been set for a potential hearing of Kosal, his newly-appointed attorney estimates it could take at least four months, given that this is a misdemeanor case.
