This morning, Samnang and Sothie met for coffee and talked about Chinese-Vietnamese new year-Don't be a drunk! Don't pretend to be Chinese!

Samnang: Sothie, will you be celebrating the Chinese new year?

Sothie: I'm Khmer. Why are you asking me about that?

Samnag: Some Khmer people also celebrate the Chinese new year too?

Sothie: In that case, they pretend to be Khmer-Chinese? They are not of Chinese nor Khmer-Chinese's blood. They are Khmer but they pretend to be Chinese.

Samnang: They pretend like Chinese?

Sothie: It means that they did not celebrate before, but when they saw Chinese or Khmer-Chinese people celebrate the new year, they followed.

Samnang: Is it good to do that?

Sothie: it's not good. Costs a lot of money.  Some people celebrate Chinese new year and France's new year.  That is a lot.  I'm so tired of seeing that.

Samnang: if you don't celebrate, some people will criticize you, as a Khmer saying they are not as clever as Khmer-Chinese blood.

Sothie: With any human being who is born, no one is smarter than the other. They are smarter or better at it just because they're trying harder. Some say that China is better than Cambodia because they work harder than Khmers. And also some Khmers are better than Chinese at other things too. Don't just believe.

Samnang: So how about Khmer-Chinese or Khmer-Vietnamese? Could they celebrate?

Sothie:  I think its ok. But I'm so bored with original Khmers who pretend to be Chinese, just to be called smart like the Chinese.
