Eleven Days into 2025 See 51 Fatalities in Road Accidents

PHNOM PENH — With just 11 days into 2025, traffic accidents have already claimed the lives of 51 people, while 105 others were seriously injured, according to the daily reports of the General Commissariat of National Police.

Between Jan. 1st and 11th, there were 77 traffic accidents caused by speeding, disrespect for the right of way, and drunk driving, according to police reports.

On Jan. 1, there were six accidents, causing six deaths and four persons to be seriously injured while on Jan. 2, there were eight traffic accidents in which five people were killed and 13 injured. 

On Jan. 3, one person died and nine were injured in six traffic accidents. On Jan. 4, there were fewer traffic accidents but there were five deaths and eight people injured. Then on Jan. 5, four people died and nine were injured in eight traffic accidents across the country.  

For Jan. 6, the daily report of the National Police Chief shows that there were seven traffic accidents leading to four deaths and eight injuries. The victim included famous rapper Ruth Ko who died in a motorcycle-car crash along Hun Sen Boulevard, commonly called the 60-meter street, in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey District.

On Jan. 7, there were four traffic accidents with seven persons injured while on Jan 8, five traffic accidents claimed the lives of two people and left seven injured.

According to daily police reports, Jan. 9 was the day with the most traffic accidents, with 11 accidents resulting in eight deaths and 29 seriously injured people. On Jan. 10, there were nine traffic accidents that caused five deaths and six persons injured.

On Jan. 11, seven persons died and five were injured in seven accidents.

In 2024, the number of fatalities due to road accidents stood at 1,509 people, which represented a drop of 91 compared to the number of fatalities in 2023. The number of accidents in 2024 totaled 2,844.
