PHNOM PENH – Chheang Sophearom earned a Master's in Economics and Management from the Czech University of Life Sciences. He chose Czech Republic, despite other scholarship options, for its high-quality European education, rich academic environment, financial aid, and travel opportunities. Now at the National Bank of Cambodia, he shared his experiences of studying abroad under a Czech government scholarship with Cambodianess.
Torn Chanritheara: While there are many scholarship opportunities provided by various countries, why did you choose to study in the Czech Republic?
Chheang Sophearom: There are many scholarship opportunities available worldwide, but I chose the Czech Republic for several compelling reasons. Firstly, the Czech Republic offers scholarship opportunities specifically for Cambodian students, with more than ten scholarships available each year. This financial support makes it an attractive option for my education.
Secondly, being located in Central Europe, the Czech Republic adheres to the European education standard system, providing a diverse range of study programs in both Czech and English. This flexibility allows me to pursue my academic interests effectively. Moreover, the Czech Republic is renowned for being one of the safest and most peaceful countries, boasting a rich history and stunning landscapes which enhance the overall study experience.
Finally, the cost of living and studying in the Czech Republic is relatively affordable compared to other European countries, making it a practical choice for my educational journey.
Torn Chanritheara: What was your experience like earning an advanced degree in the Czech Republic? What was the most fascinating thing you discovered, and could you give me a brief overview of the university system?
Chheang Sophearom: Studying abroad has been a life-changing experience for me. It was very challenging, but it also provided a valuable opportunity for personal and academic growth. During my time in the Czech Republic, I not only worked toward my degree but also learned to live independently, manage stress, and focus on personal development while maintaining a work-life balance.
One of the most fascinating aspects of studying in Europe was the opportunity to travel to various countries. I explored different places, gained new perspectives, and learned about diverse cultures and histories. The Czech Republic is rich in cultural heritage, but visiting other European countries also broadened my understanding of the world. Each destination had its unique charm, and these experiences significantly contributed to my personal growth.
Among the universities offering scholarships, I chose the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU). CZU follows European education standards, emphasizing independent learning, critical thinking, and research. The grading system is rigorous, with students unable to fail registered courses. Each course includes lectures and seminars for a comprehensive learning experience. To earn a master’s degree, students must complete 120 credits, covering both mandatory and elective courses. They must also submit and defend a thesis of 60 to 80 pages and pass a final oral exam with a university committee.
Torn Chanritheara: How did you cope with challenges living in foreign country far from Cambodia?
Chheang Sophearom: Living far from home in an unfamiliar environment can be challenging, but it is also a transformative experience. There are many ways to adapt and turn the experience into a rewarding and enriching journey.
Based on my experience, The first thing you need to do is to manage both the practical and emotional aspects of this transition effectively. Ensuring a comfortable living environment, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, staying organized, and establishing a balanced routine are essential for adapting to a new country.
Homesickness is a common struggle, so staying in touch with family and friends through video calls and messages can offer emotional comfort. Staying connected to one’s roots by cooking traditional meals, listening to familiar music, or celebrating cultural festivals can also help.
Loneliness can be a significant challenge for international students, so I encourage building connections both with those from your home country and international peers.
Personally, I found great comfort in bonding with Cambodian friends in the Czech Republic through shared experiences, study sessions, and social activities like trips and gatherings. Additionally, forming friendships with international students helped me gain diverse perspectives and adapt to cultural differences. Most importantly, adopting an open-minded approach is key. Treating this opportunity as a mission to explore, grow, and embrace new cultures enriches both academic and personal experiences.
Torn Chanritheara: What are your tips for students who want to get scholarships to study in the Czech Republic or elsewhere in Central Europe?
Chheang Sophearom: If you are interested in applying for a scholarship to study in the Czech Republic, it is important to start by gathering relevant information about available opportunities. The scholarship application period is typically open from July to September each year, and applications can be submitted online.
After completing the online application, applicants are required to take two tests: one in logical reasoning and another in English. Successful candidates are then invited for an interview. Since the competition is high, I recommend preparing thoroughly to achieve the best possible scores on these tests to secure a spot in the interview. Staying organized, keeping track of deadlines, and preparing well for the application process can significantly increase your chances of success.
Torn Chanritheara: Why should Cambodian students study in the Czech Republic?
Chheang Sophearom: I would highly recommend the Czech Government Scholarship to anyone looking for an international scholarship program. One of its unique advantages of the Czech Government Scholarship is that during studies period, scholarship recipients can also apply for the Erasmus double degree or exchange program, which not only provides additional financial support, but also allows students to study in other European countries.
Furthermore, studying in the Czech Republic under the European education system enhances academic and professional skills. Students also benefit from the opportunity to travel across Europe, participate in international conferences, attend workshops, and engage in networking events, all of which contribute to professional development. Overall, studying in the Czech Republic offers a unique and enriching academic journey while providing invaluable global exposure and career growth opportunities. I encourage Cambodian students to take advantage of this opportunity and expand their horizons.
