PHNOM PENH – Fans have paid tribute to rapper Ruth Ko who was killed in a traffic accident and have demanded central barriers on the dangerous stretch of road where he died.
His motorcycle was hit by a Lexus with Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) plates at about 2am on Jan. 6 on the 60-meter road in Meanchey district in Phnom Penh.
The driver, a Royal Military Police officer, was questioned and confirmed not to be intoxicated.
Cambodian-French Ruth Ko, 24, performed under the KlapYaHandz label in Phnom Penh, the country’s first hip hop label, and drew fame among young people for his talents. He was also a coach for the Rapper Cambodian Season One.
Pictures and videos of the accident were widespread on social media, showing Ruth Ko’s body on the road.
KlapYaHandz label asked for pictures of the incident not to be shared because they might hurt his family, team, friends and fans.
“It's a sad story, but he wants everyone to remember his songs, the short videos he made everyone happy, and many other good things,” KlapYaHandz wrote.
The hip-hop community, singers and many fans showed regret and condolences for the loss of such a talented individual whose career had been rising gradually since he joined the label at the age of 17.
The Rapper Cambodia posted on its Facebook page that Ruth Ko left a legacy of positive energy with infectious humor.
“He was a true inspiration to many, and his impact on the Cambodian hip-hop scene will be long-lasting,” it said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the entire hip-hop community during this difficult time.”
Police said the Lexus was driving south and turned left to cross the road to the entrance to Borey Peng Huot when it collided with the motorcycle which was traveling in the opposite direction.
Many people have demanded that central barriers be put on the road where many accidents have happened.
Police spokesperson Sam Vicheka said an expert team is investigating the case.
In the past, RCAF-plated vehicles have caused many traffic accidents, prompting the National Defense Ministry to warn about the improper use of the RCAF-plated vehicles, allowing only the military staff to use the vehicles with such a plate.
“Some vehicle users were arrogant and were not suitable for being military officers, which downgraded their value and triggered criticism among the public,” the ministry said. The issue brought the RCAF into disrepute.
