PHNOM PENH – Thai soldiers have opened fire on Cambodian civilians, injuring five in Prey Chan village along the disputed border.
Banteay Meanchey Deputy Governor and spokesman Ly Sovannarith confirmed the incident in Ou Beychoan commune in Ou Chrov district.
“The shooting just happened and they used live ammunition,” Sovannarith said.
He added that authorities were working to verify the number of casualties.
Information Minister Neth Pheaktra also confirmed the incident, saying it took place on the afternoon of November 12.
“Thai soldiers opened fire on civilians, injuring five, according to preliminary information from local authorities,” Pheaktra said.
This marks the first reported case of Thai soldiers using live ammunition against unarmed Cambodian civilians.
On September 17, the Thai military reportedly used rubber bullets and tear gas against Cambodians, injuring dozens of civilians and Buddhist monks.
