PHNOM PENH – The upper bridge of a new overpass at the Kbal Thnal area of Phnom Penh will be opened temporarily from next month to ease traffic at one of the busiest gateways to the capital ahead of Khmer New Year.
Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng said on Mar. 28 that the second tier of the overpass — officially called Morodok Techo — will be completed on Mar. 30 and opened for use on Apr. 1. The second tier is part of the construction’s first phase.
The governor said that Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered that the bridge which connects Samdech Techo Hun Sen Blvd. (60m Street) and Monivong Blvd be opened temporarily to relieve congestion in the area during the festive period, which runs from Apr. 13 to 16.
Millions of people working or studying in the capital are expected to visit families in their homelands.
Sreng said temporary use of the bridge will also help solve congestion at the intersection of Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Street.
Ground was broken for the overpass in 2022 and the project is expected to finish in 2025. The flyover, consisting of two tiers, is costing more than $36 million.
