SIEM REAP  — UK tourists Adrian and Owen got a taste of ancient Khmer archery when they tried traditional bows at the Sankranta.

“I think it’s something that’s very unique and should be celebrated,” Adrian said.

He had found out that there were aspects to Khmer archery that were unique and that most Cambodians have a deep love of it.

The Khmer Traditional Archery program was a part of the 10th Sankranta celebration, giving tourists a chance to use the bows and arrows without charge.

National and international tourists flocked to experience the sport in Siem Reap.

Owen was specifically interested in the Khmer traditional bow. The beautifully made bow made Khmer archery distinctive from other types of archery.

“It’s a very nice-looking bow and quite cool to have a go with it as well,” he said.

Both said they would try the sport again and bring their friends to experience this style of archery which warriors and hunters valued as a crucial skill for centuries.

The walls of Angkorian temples have representations of bows and arrows in use during combat.

The Khmer army bow was developed for use in combat to defend the Khmer Empire.

Some vintage Khmer army bows are still in use for sporting events and others have been placed on display to preserve the ancestral heritage.
