Hun Sen refers to the bi-partisan bill that targets Cambodian government and officials over alleged human rights abuses

PHNOM PENH-- Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed doubts Monday about the US Administration imposing sanctions against Cambodia.

“President Donald Trump won’t be foolish to push away Cambodia, a country it has ties with,” he said.

“If sanctions target Defense Minister Tea Banh, it is equivalent to the US cutting defense ties with Cambodia. "And if it sanctions Prak Sokhonn, it means it severs diplomatic ties,” he said, referring to the foreign minister.

The “Cambodia Democracy Act 2019” adopted by the US House of Representatives this month provides for visa restrictions and blocking assets of government or individuals "for having undermined democracy or violated human rights in the country."

This bi-partisan bill will, if approved by the Senate, be sent to President Trump for approval.
