PHNOM PENH--Prime Minister Hun Sen has ordered the authorities of all levels of government to strengthen security measures in order to maintain public order during Pchum Ben celebrations.

"May the authorities at all levels maintain security, safety and public order as well as help manage traffic for our people and tourists in order for them to enjoy Pchum Ben celebrations nationwide," Hun Sen said on his Facebook page Saturday.

The prime minister also sent a message to all Cambodians on the occasion of Pchum Ben, mentioning that the country enjoys peace under his leadership, which enables people to celebrate events such as this one.

“As the country has peace and social stability, we have had the chance to celebrate and enjoy either small or big festivals across the country,” he said.

Interior Minister Sar Kheng recently ordered provincial and municipal governors to monitor former activists and members of the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) during Pchum Ben. Over the last two weeks, six former CNRP activists have been arrested and charged with attempting to overthrow the government.

Pchum Ben is Cambodia’s most important religious celebration during which people honor the dead.
