King Norodom Sihamoni to Attend Beijing Winter Olympics

Cambodia’s Royal Palace confirmed that King Norodom Sihamoni will travel to Beijing later this year for the winter Olympics



PHNOM PENH--King Norodom Sihamoni will fly to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which are set to kick off on Feb. 4 with events running until Feb. 20.



Vath Chamroeun, secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, confirmed that King Sihamoni will be in attendance for China’s hosting of the Winter Olympics, but he did not know the exact time of his departure there yet.



“I have received information from the Royal Palace that the King will attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics,” he said.



On Jan. 25, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian welcomed Cambodian royalty.



“We welcome His Majesty to China to witness the historical moment of Beijing becoming the first city ever to host both the summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games,” he said, adding that King Norodom Sihamoni is an old friend of the Chinese people.
