PHNOM PENH--Former opposition leader Kem Sokha will be in the courtroom when his treason trial starts next month, Chan Chen, one of his defense lawyers, said.

The trial is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2020. Phnom Penh Municipal Court has ordered Kem Sokha to show up for the trial. Two other individuals – Sar Sorn and Ma Chetra – have also been summoned to appear as witnesses.

Sokha was arrested in September 2017 on alleged espionage charges that critics said were groundless. He was released from house arrest last month but remains barred by the court from leaving the country and engaging in political activity while awaiting trial.
