STUNG TRENG – The director of Thala Borivath Health Center has called for its expansion after births rose to the point where there is nowhere to rest before delivery.

The treatment room can accommodate only four beds. Women awaiting childbirth must rest on the ground while others rest on beds outside the room.

Director Nin Sorya said 25-35 women give birth per month last year. There were 34 births in December.

"Some people come to give birth, but there is no place to rest, they have to go home, some have to go to another hospital, and some others, I do not know where they go to give birth," she said.

She said she had asked the provincial Health Department to build more rooms but no decision had yet been made.

Khun Sokhon, who had just given birth to her second child in a day, and was resting on the bed outside the room, said the center was near her home and provided good services for pregnant women.

"I gave birth to my first child here,“ she said. “I trust it and the sanitary facilities are appropriate and acceptable."

Health Department director Ung Soveat could not be reached for comment at the publication time.
