Cambodia is not free of the virus yet, the ministry insists and warns that it is too early to go back to normal.

PHNOM PENH--Or Vandine, spokesperson for the Minister of Health called on the Cambodian people to continue following the ministry's measures to prevent a second wave of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections in Cambodia.

Vandine said that Cambodia is not free from COVID-19 yet, despite the government’s apparent success in controlling the first wave of the virus.

“Weddings or other events, the Ministry of Health still recommends postponing them so that we can delay the second wave of infections,” she said.

“As the World Health Organization said, Cambodia is still at risk and we are still not free from the COVID-19 offensive yet,” Vandine added.

Since the first case of COVID-19 was identified in Cambodia on Jan. 27, 2020, just 122 cases have been reported by the health authorities. Among them, 120 patients have now recovered and, as of May 11, only two patients remain hospitalized.

On Friday the health ministry sent the last two COVID-19 patients from the provincial hospitals where they were being treated to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh.

As of May 11, the Ministry of Health has sent 14,094 samples to the Pasteur Institute for COVID-19 testing. This is up from 12,378 tests on May 4, but means that Cambodia conducted just 1,716 tests over the last seven days.
