PHNOM PENH – Eng Muyngim founded the SheRuns club two years ago to promote running and sports for girls and women. As the group's president, she believes more women value sports than they did 10 years ago.

Muyngim, 33, said running is more straightforward than other sports, though it requires proper technique or running style.

As an amateur athlete who has been running for nearly 10 years, she said what makes it easy is that it can be done in a group or individually.

“We at SheRuns have a vision to get everyone, especially Cambodians, to exercise regularly, especially girls and women. We will try to promote sports through running for girls and women,” Muyngim said.

Her vision is for girls and women to be healthy, significantly relieving stress.

“They feel better when they run and play sports. They are much healthier and their bodies are more muscular,” she said.

“All women should run and play sports or exercise regularly because it protects us from diseases and improves our physical and emotional health. Running is a way to find who we are through distance running.”

Muyngim is also one of four Cambodian women to win the Sport Award at the 2024 Women of the Future Awards in Southeast Asia.

She is acknowledged for her commitment through SheRuns to promote health and well-being while inspiring women to embrace running for its physical and social benefits.

Over the past two years, SheRuns has attracted about 40 female members, most of whom are between 30 and 40 and like to run long distances.

She said the number of female athletes and runners in Cambodia is increasing but is still limited.
