PHNOM PENH – To focus on improving school quality and fostering 21st-century skills, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport has suspended the National Outstanding Student Examination for the 2024-2025 academic year. Instead, provinces are encouraged to organize local competitions in Khmer literature, mathematics, and physics for ninth and twelfth graders. Prizes will be awarded based on each province's resources.
“As stated in a January 27 announcement, the ministry's primary focus is on supporting schools in achieving model status,” explained Khuon Vichheka, the ministry's spokesperson.
“This initiative aims to enhance education quality and consistently implement extracurricular programs that equip students with the skills, abilities, and behaviors essential for success in the 21st century,” he added.
In addition to the ministry’s current priorities, the shift aims to enhance provincial autonomy, Vichheka said, by providing opportunities for them to organize competitions aligned with their local contexts and available resources.
Vichheka acknowledged that the grade 12 baccalaureate exam provides a crucial opportunity for students nationwide to showcase their skills and strive for excellent grades, particularly grade A, which are highly valued.
“The grade 12 national exam opens doors for students to gain recognition and numerous scholarship opportunities that can support their future academic endeavors,” Vichheka emphasized.
Organized annually by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the National Outstanding Student Examination aims to elevate the quality of education. Top students who successfully pass the provincial selection process qualify to participate in the national round.
Students who perform well in the exam are typically awarded certificates, medals, scholarships, cash prizes or other educational materials.
The National Outstanding Student Examination for the 2023-2024 academic year took place on May 13, 2024, at Chea Sim Santhormok High School in Phnom Penh.
