PHNOM PENH – Workers with high blood pressure, cancer or diabetes receive free treatments and medical care under their National Social Security Fund (NSSF) membership, its top official says.

Sok Bora, the NSSF’s director of the benefit division said fund membership was like “having protective armor” for the workers.

Medical costs for occupational hazards a well as healthcare services are covered. Moreover, the workers will also receive a pension when they retire, Bora said at a workshop on the NSSF with journalists.

The workshop focused on building and strengthening journalists’ capability through the presentation of NSSF experts to promote the social security fund more widely to the public.

It was also to increase engagement between the social security promotion and media institutions.

The NSSF has covered workers’ occupational hazards since 2008, health care services since 2016, and pensions since 2022.

The fund reported that it received contributions of 740 billion riel in 2022 and spent around 345 billion riel on occupational hazards for 9,083 workers, of whom 4,539 were women.

By 2022, there were 80,000 workers receiving around $7.9 million from the NSSF as maternity allowances. The NSSF registered 21,430 enterprises, institutions, and outlets in and out of the system, with more than 3.12 million members, of whom more than 1.79 million were women.

Around three million members used the NSSF for healthcare services, the report said.
