PHNOM PENH – One civilian has been confirmed dead and three injured after Thai soldiers opened fire in a border area.

Banteay Meanchey provincial spokesperson Ly Sovannarith said the incident happened at about 3.50 pm on November 12 when Thai soldiers opened fire with RPD machine guns on Cambodians sheltering in tents in Prey Chan village, an area within Cambodian territory.

In a separate statement, Defence Ministry spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said the shooting resumed at 05:54 pm, and the Thai soldiers continue their military activities to this day.

During the incident mentioned above, Socheata said Cambodian forces and relevant authorities were unarmed and stationed nearby as they sought to ensure the safety of Cambodian citizens.

In the same statement, the provincial administration also condemned the attack as “inhuman and brutal,” calling it a violation of the ceasefire and peace accord signed by both countries' prime ministers in Malaysia on October 26, witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump.

Earlier, Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra cited a preliminary report that five people had been wounded.

This marks the first reported case of Thai soldiers using live ammunition against unarmed Cambodian civilians. On September 17, the Thai military reportedly fired rubber bullets and tear gas at Cambodians, injuring dozens of civilians and Buddhist monks.
