PHNOM PENH – A pink dolphin has been found dead in Kampot province, says a villager who confirmed its death.

Ly Thearith, of Trery Koh commune, said fishermen found it floating offshore and took the carcass ashore.

It weighed about 50kg and was 1.98 meters long. Experts from the Fisheries Administration had dissected samples for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

“While there has been no information about the cause of its death, officials buried the carcass on April 17,” Thearith said.

Pink dolphins are a rare species listed as critically endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species. They are found only in the exclusive marine areas of Kampot and Kep provinces.

In Kampot, the population is estimated to be between 40 and 46, according to Chan Rithy, director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
