PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Sen will visit Maldives on Jan. 15-17 with a number of documents to be signed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation says.

“The upcoming visit of Samdech Techo Prime Minister will present an opportunity for both sides to review the entire range of bilateral cooperation, including exploring new avenues to further strengthen cooperation on trade, investment, connectivity, health, culture, agriculture and human resources development that are mutually beneficial to the two countries and people,” the ministry said.

The visit comes at the request of Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The PM’s entourage will include Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Senior Minister Othsman Hassan, Tourism Minister Thong Khon, Health Minister Mam Bun Heng and a business group.

The ministry said Hun Sen and Solih would discuss issues including bilateral ties and regional and international cooperation. Cooperation documents would be signed.

Chum Sounry, the ministry’s spokesman, said that detailed information about them will be available after the visit.

Hun Sen has previously said that his visit to the South Asian island would aim to boost tourism connectivity as Maldives is one of the top destinations for tourists while eyeing rice exports to the country.

Cambodia and Maldives established diplomatic relations in 1995 but don’t have resident ambassadors.

During his stay, the PM will also meet top Maldives officials including the Speaker of the Majlis and the foreign minister.
