PHNOM PENH – Private education institutions will be free from tax for the next five years to enhance the field of education.

Prime Minister Hun Sen announced the decision on Feb. 1 at the request of a Cambodian Higher Education Association delegation.

Heng Vanda, chairman of the association board, said the institutions would still pay payroll tax, withholding tax on locations, immovable properties tax and patent tax.

Vanda said the decision was a contribution to promoting education in the country and helping the institutions.

“The tax exemption is a delightful news. We will use the money on developing and strengthening the institutions further,” he said.

The tax exemption has been effective since 1996, when the private sector emerged for the first time in the country, and will be in effect from 2024. There are currently 123 private educational institutions, Vanda said.
