PHNOM PENH — To welcome the New Year, major tourism destinations are getting ready with decorations, food fairs, exhibitions, concerts, art performances, and fireworks.

Tourism hotspots include Phnom Penh, Siem Reap province, Battambang province, and Preah Sihanouk province that have prepared for the countdown.

Taking a glance at Phnom Penh, in addition to the 25th anniversary celebrations of the win-win policy implementation at the Win-Win Monument held on Dec. 29, the New Year’s Eve countdown will be celebrated to welcome both national and international tourists.

Many products made in Cambodia are displayed at the monument where food fairs, concerts and fireworks are taking place through Dec. 31.

Another major tourist hub, Siem Reap city is getting ready to welcome tourists for the New Year’s Eve countdown. The main streets, and especially Pub Street, are decorated and concerts are being held at three locations along the Siem Reap river.

The Battambang Provincial Department of Tourism has prepared a food fair that is taking place from Dec. 29 through Dec. 31.

The purpose of this fair is to congratulate the city of Battambang, which has joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) due to its unique cuisine on Oct. 31, 2023. In addition to the food fair, art performances, concerts and fireworks are taking place to welcome local residents and visitors.

In Preah Sihanouk province, exhibitions, concerts and fireworks are taking place on the beach along the gulf. Preah Sihanouk Provincial Deputy Governor Long Dimanche said there will be one major concert along with exhibitions and fireworks at Techo Square. And there will be some celebrations at the Bay of Lights Ream Sihanoukville as well, he said on Dec. 29. “We have worked closely with relevant officials to be ready to ensure the safety and security of tourists who will visit our province,” Dimanche said.

As New Year’s Eve will be celebrated in each province to attract tourists, the Ministry of Tourism and the National Committee for Clean City are conducting a competition under the theme Best Countdown City of the Year.

The evaluation will be based on some key characteristics such as decorations, hygiene, environment, security, safety, order and satisfaction of tourists and participants.

The committee also urges the public to vote for the best countdown city of the year from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2. The link can be found on the Ministry of Tourism’s Facebook Page.
