PHNOM PENH – The government will build 250 kilometers of roads along the border in northeastern provinces using $27 million raised from the public.
The Foundation for Border Infrastructure Development raised the money between August 26 and October 31 from public contributions.
Prime Minister Hun Manet appointed Kim Bunthan, Minister Delegate Attached to Prime Minister, as head of an adhoc working group and General Kwan Seam of Military Engineering Forces as deputy head to oversee the fund.
Bunthan said on November 1 that the fund could construct four new paved roads with a total length of 250km. He said the roads will be a total of 9-10 meters wide with driving surfaces seven meters wide.
Of the 50km, 147km will be in Mondulkiri province while 102km will be in Ratanakiri province.
Bunthan said the engineering forces tasked to complete the project are committed to building quality and resilient roads and to follow orders from the Prime Minster.
“As a soldier, can’t we be negligent? Of course, we can’t,” he said.
The construction is expected to be completed in April 2027. The machinery has been deployed for the construction.
Kwan Seam said nearly half of the total ring road border has been completed and the government will continue to build more in the future.
The 2,260-kilometer border ring road began in 1994 as part of a broader effort to secure the country's borders.
