PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on developing countries to adhere to principles of independence, sovereignty and self-determination in choosing development paths while sticking to dialogue in solving issues.

“The pluralism trend and the division of the bloc are becoming clearer,” he said.

“Respect for independence, sovereignty and self-determination to choose the path for the development of each country is a task which we, as developing countries, must continue to take.”

The PM was addressing the Voice of South Summit, organized by India, the Chair of G20 for 2023 and attended by leaders from Bangladesh, Mongolia, Guyana, Uzbekistan among others on Jan. 12.

Hun Sen said the South countries are the victims and not the troublemakers.

He pointed to issues across the world from the Russian war in Ukraine, climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, disruption in global supply chains and rising inflation which are affecting the development and recovery of developing countries.

He said priorities should be building prosperous futures and economic recovery by promoting smooth and revitalized international economic and trade through accelerated integration and supply chain connectivity and strengthening the bilateral and multilateral trading systems.

“Deepening cooperation among the South countries, partner countries and developed countries, both within the regional and non-regional frameworks and international institutions, is a necessary mechanism to find win-win strategies and maximize the benefits of development from new socio-economics as well,” he said.

He spoke of the importance of a culture of dialogue in addressing challenges to prevent economic divisions and the bloc, as well as to avoid any possible military conflict and maintain peace, security and stability.

Hun Sen asked Indian PM Narendra Modi, who chairs the G20, to make the voice of the South countries heard during the upcoming meeting.
