While reports circulated this morning, the Ministry of Health on the afternoon of March 22 confirmed that the fourth person to die from COVID-19 in Cambodia was a retired doctor.

PHNOM PENH--A retired Cambodian doctor has died of COVID-19 at Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh, the Ministry of Health confirmed on the afternoon of March 22.

Dr. Sdoeung Chea has passed away at the age of 75 at 8 a.m. on March 22 after contracting COVID-19. He was reportedly in a critical condition for four days, but was only admitted to Khmer-Soviet on March 21 in a state of exhaustion and suffering from severe pneumonia.

Dr. Chea was a pediatrician and had been president of the Cambodia Sports Medical Commission, but has now become the fourth death in Cambodia to be officially linked to COVID-19.

He is just one of the 1,233 people who have contracted COVID-19 since the Feb. 20 community outbreak began following a breach in security at a Phnom Penh COVID-19 quarantine facility.
