Sar Thet Made New National Police Chief

PHNOM PENH – Sar Thet has been appointed as the new national police chief, succeeding Neth Savoeun who is now a deputy prime minister.



King Norodom Sihamoni issued a royal decree on Aug. 23 appointing Thet at the request of Prime Minister Hun Manet. Thet was also promoted to four-star general. He was previously chief of Phnom Penh police.



Two more deputy national chiefs were also appointed by Manet. The first was Sar Ratha, son of former deputy prime minister and interior minister Sar Kheng. Sar Ratha was transferred from the General Department of Immigration. The second was Chuon Narin, the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police chief.



In a separate decision by Interior Minister Sar Sokha, Narin was also appointed as the new Phnom Penh police chief.



The same day, newly appointed Minister of Interior Sar Sokha and Minister of National Defense Tea Seiha were promoted to four-star general in their respective ministries.



As part of changes affected by the change of top leadership, Prak Sophoan, son of ex-foreign affairs minister Prak Sokhonn, was appointed as Siem Reap governor, replacing Tea Seiha. Suon Somalin also replaced Chea Somethy as Prey Veng Governor. Somethy is now Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation.

Svay Rieng's deputy governor Peng Posa, son of ex-deputy prime minister Men Sam An, was also promoted to the provincial governor.
