SIEM REAP – Siem Reap province — Cambodia’s main tourist destination — has introduced its first public bus service on a pilot basis between newly established Run Ta Ek town and Siem Reap city.

The daily free service will help people who volunteer to move from Angkor Park to live in the development area of Run Ta Ek. It will make it easier to travel to work and make a living, the provincial administration said.

The bus stop at the Siem Reap River Park will serve as the starting point, and the bus will run nine times a day from 6am to 4pm.

The Run Ta Ek town bus stop will be at the development market, and the bus will have 10 daily departures from 5.30am to 6pm.

Run Ta Ek town was established in January, absorbing Run Ta Ek commune of Banteay Srei district and Ballaing commune of Prasat Bakong district.

The newly developed area, along with Peak Sneng, hosts thousands of families moving from their previous houses in protected area of Angkor Park, a relocation government said was necessary to protect the temples.

They were given a plot of land to build on and the government has poured in resources to develop the area, including building a new market, schools, health centers and religious monuments.
