PHNOM PENH – Vath Chamroeun, secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), has told the national sports federations to strengthen and develop athletic ability to achieve good results in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand, as the country did in the SEA Games in May.

Cambodia recorded its best ever SEA Games performance, winning 282 medals when it hosted the regional event.

Chamroeun told a meeting of 51 sports federation on Dec. 19 that Cambodia needs to maintain such good statistics when it competes in Thailand.

He said Cambodian athletes must prove that all medals are won without bias and the Games are held to a high standard of impartiality and fairness.

The NOCC official urged all national sports federations to strengthen the capacity and training of athletes to achieve good results in the future.

To boost the capacity and training, Chamroeun also advised the federations to work with their respective international sports federation for athletes to train abroad.

This was very beneficial for Cambodian athletes to develop their skills in a high quality and well disciplined training camp.

“For the 33rd SEA Games, we need to strengthen our training in all kinds of sports. Going abroad for training is our advantage as we only focus on and sharpen training,” he said.

“On the other hand, they have good discipline, a good place, a good training ground and equipment.”

Chamroeun said China has provided scholarships for Cambodian athletes to further train their ability and skills.
