PHNOM PENH – Six Cambodian students stuck in the war-torn Sudanese capital Khartoum are staying in a safe place with other students in the same university, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says.

Ministry spokesperson An Sokkhoeurn said the six, including two women, were studying at a university in the city when the fighting started on April 15.

As intense fighting between forces loyal to two rival generals has been raging for two weeks, foreign embassies have started to evacuate their citizens and paused their operations in Khartoum, which is a battlefield.

On April 24, Prime Minister Hun Sen said the Cambodians would tag along when Malaysian authorities evacuate their citizens.

With help from the Malaysian Embassy and the Cambodian Embassy in Cairo in Egypt, the Cambodian students were at a safe place with Malaysian students waiting to be evacuated soon.

The spokesperson, however, did not provide the date of the evacuation.

Malaysia has been working with relevant parties to finalize transport to get the students out of Sudan as soon as possible.
