PHNOM PENH – Svay Rieng province is mine-free after 35,000 of the explosives were removed, Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) says.

Between 1994 and 2022, CMAC cleared 466 minefields covering more than 449 hectares in the province.

CMAC removed 1,400 anti-personnel landmines, 17 anti-tank mines, and 7,166 cluster bombs and found 26,260 unexploded ordnance.

Liberating Svay Rieng from the threat of landmines makes it the eighth mine-free province.

The others are Stung Treng, Kep, Prey Veng, Preah Sihanouk, Thbong Khmum and Kampong Cham, along with Phnom Penh. However, national records say more than 1,000  sites still have mines.
