BANGKOK -- The Thai Ministry of Public Health on Friday vows to raise the quality of street food in order to boost tourism and the economy.

Speaking at the "Clean Food Good Taste" campaign in Pathum Thani Province located at the outskirt of Bangkok, Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha said street food vendors should take the opportunity to promote Thailand's distinctive food culture by improving and ensuring the quality and hygiene of the food prepared on the streets.

"The government will support street food vendors in showcasing their local characteristics in their food," said Sathit, "However this project can only be achieved with the cooperation from food vendors in up-grading the tidiness and quality of the street food."

Sathit said that more people were dependent on street foods and the habit has become part of their daily lives.

Statistics showed that last year, out of 93,261 street food stalls surveyed, only 84.72 percent met standards for tastes and hygiene, Sathit said.
