PHNOM PENH--The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports has set a date for the 3rd National Games as Phnom Penh and provinces across the country have begun preparing athletes to participate in the biggest sports fiesta.

Director-General of Sports of the Ministry of Education, Ouk Sethycheat said this national sports competition, which first started in 2016, is set for November 17 to 28 for its third edition.

The first edition was held in 2016 and the second edition in 2018. However, the third edition in 2020 was put off due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Although the sports that are to be competed for in the third edition are yet to be determined, Sethycheat confirmed that the sports disciplines with high potential, especially the sport considered for the 2023 SEA Games, will be put into the National Games as a test trial.

For the 31st SEA Games coming up in Hanoi, Vietnam, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, together with the National Organizing Committee for the 2023 SEA Games (CAMSOC) and the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, are in discussion on the types of sports to be competed for.

According to the SEA Games Federation Council, any sport included in the SEA Games must be a member of the international federation and vice versa.

During the first National Games, 14 sports disciplines were involved. In the second edition in 2018, athletes from across the country competed in 27 sports.

Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron said that the third national sports competition is in preparation for the 2023 SEA Games. Therefore, the competition must be coordinated between the Education Ministry and the National Organizing Committee for the 2023 SEA Games (CAMSOC) with the participating national sports federations.
