PHNOM PENH – Authorities are trying to retrieve a vessel carrying sand which sank on Nov, 20 next to a bridge across the Tonle Sap in Russey Keo district, blocking the waterway and disrupting road transport.

District Governor Ek Khundoeurn said the incident was due to the vessel travelling against the current, leading it to being unstable. No one was hurt.

“The vessel sank and hit the bridge. Now the expert team of the Phnom Penh Department of Public Works and Transport is attempting to find the way to take it out of the water but the force of water from the river is making it difficult,” he said.

Travelling on and under the bridge has been halted for the time being so that experts can raise the vessel.

Thmey Thmey contacted Sam Piseth, director of Phnom Penh Public Works and Transport, but he said he not available for comment.
