PHNOM PENH Nearly 30 tonnes of illegally imported frozen meat, mostly from China, were seized in the 14 days of this month.

On Dec. 9, a truck carrying 17 tonnes of frozen Chinese duck meat brought through the Sihanoukville Port to distribute in Phnom Penh was intercepted, according to the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production. A truck with another 12 tonnes was seized on Dec. 11.

The next day, a tuk-tuk carrying 400 kilograms of pork products, such as tongue, ears and frozen meat was confiscated. It had been intended for distribution in Phnom Penh

None of the products had a permit from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The seized frozen meat has been stored at the General Department of Animal Health and Animal Production for further legal action.

The Agriculture Ministry could not be reached for comment.

Farmers recently complained about the decline in the price of domestic pork and live pigs arising from excessive amounts of illegally imported frozen pork,.

The Ministry of Agriculture previously said that the ministry was aware of the issue and was promoting the export of local pigs while cooperating with other ministries to curb the imports.
