PHNOM PENH – Two deminers were killed in a landmine explosion on Jan. 16 in Oddar Meanchey province's Trapaing Prasat district.

The Cambodian Mine Action Center said the victims were Pov Nepin and Oeun Chandara, and both of them were CMAC officials. The incident happened at 7.45 am in minefield BS/CMAA/37102 in Bak Anloung commune’s Trapeang Prei village.

Ly Thuch, first vice-president of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority, said the accident was a big loss of brave human resources who sacrificed their lives with a strong will and conscience for humanitarian causes, particularly for the safety of local people.

The minefield is being researched by Halo Trust Cambodia and cleared by CMAC. The former road was once occupied by the Khmer Rouge army, who placed mines strategically.
